You may know that I have Essential Tremor (ET) which is a common brain disorder. As I searched for possible therapies that could help my brain and my tremor (shaky hands), I came across Hyperbaric Therapy. Even though it is not indicated for ET, I found that for me it calmed down my shaky hands and really helped me feel great. So I decided to investigate further and then brought it into Living Health Functional Medicine so we could provide it for our patients.
When I climb into the chamber, it reminds me of climbing into a tent when I have been backpacking or camping. As the pressure in the chamber increases, it feels like being on an airplane - you feel slight pressure in the ears that is easily taken care of by yawning or chewing gum.
Mild Hyperbaric Therapy (mHBOT) is a form of therapy that involves breathing in air that is pressurized to slightly higher than atmospheric pressure. The pressure allows more oxygen to be dissolved into the plasma (fluid) of the blood. Increased oxygen in the plasma means more of the body’s tissues and cells receive oxygen.
The simple way of thinking about this is:
Increased Oxygen = Increased Energy!
Increased Energy = Increased Function!
Look, your body needs oxygen to produce energy. If the body has plenty of energy then it is more likely to perform all of the needed functions. Below I talk about some of the benefits that have been seen in the research with mHBOT.
Hyperbaric therapy can increase oxygen delivery to enhance the body's natural healing processes, promote tissue repair, and reduce inflammation.
Another way that mHBOT works is by stimulating the production of stem cells. Stem cells are special cells in the body that have the potential to change into various types of cells in the body. By increasing the production of stem cells, mHBOT can help to promote tissue repair and regeneration, and may even have the potential to treat certain chronic conditions.
In addition, mHBOT can also enhance the body's immune system. When the body is exposed to increased pressure and oxygen, it triggers a number of immune responses, including the production of white blood cells and the activation of the body's natural defense mechanisms. This has the potential to help improve the body's ability to fight off infections and other illnesses.
Who should not use HBOT?
Hyperbaric therapy may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions, including untreated pneumothorax (collapsed lung), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with air trapping, high fever, seizure disorders that are not well controlled, certain types of ear and sinus conditions, and untreated malignancies. Additionally, individuals who have recently undergone ear surgery, sinus surgery, or chest surgery may also need to avoid hyperbaric therapy. It is important to discuss any medical conditions or concerns with a healthcare professional before undergoing hyperbaric therapy.
Are there any Dangers with Hyperbaric therapy?
Hyperbaric therapy can have side effects such as ear pain, sinus congestion, temporary nearsightedness, oxygen toxicity, and rarely, seizures. However, these side effects are generally mild and temporary, and the benefits of the therapy usually outweigh the risks. As with any medical treatment, again, it is important to discuss the potential risks and benefits with your healthcare provider before undergoing hyperbaric therapy.
mHBOT is only approved for treating Altitude sickness. However, mHBOT is a safe and non-invasive therapy that can potentially provide a range of health benefits by providing increased oxygen. Thus it is used to improve performance of the body by providing more oxygen to the tissues. Improved oxygen can possibly help the body in a variety of conditions such as chronic pain, sports injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and neurological disorders.
I love getting in the chamber and feel vitalized and focused afterwards. We would love for you to come into Living Health Functional Medicine in Midway, Utah and give it a try!
